It is not necessary to find the queen every time you work with your hive, but if you notice that your hive looks a little weak, or you see queen cells being built that is a sure sign that you need to check on her. It can be difficult sometimes to locate her especially since most hives contain anywhere from 10,000 - 50,000 honeybees. This task can be quite daunting, but we have come up with an easy system that helps you to find her quickly and efficiently.
The queen will not always stay in the center, sometimes she may move out from the center if she is running out of space. Generally all hives follow this pattern, so be sure to place each frame back in its original location and direction if you have removed them. This will help the bees to maintain a productive hive.
Once you have located your queen you can check to make sure she looks happy and healthy. A quiet observer can even catch a glimpse of her laying her eggs.
